is called Flyboys: A True Story of Courage, written by author James Bradley, and the student is charged with writing a comprehensive review about this slice of military history.
The initial part of any review involves why the review is important in the first place (other than the fact that the author
is already known for publishing other similar books, such as the Flags of Our Fathers). This is a historical depiction that, to many, reads like a novel, making this period
of time very interesting to study. Another reason this book is important is because it touches on the life of one of
our presidents, George H.W. Bush, who was one of the "flyboys" in question. While Bush has been known to serve in the Pacific Theater during World War II, this simply
adds more light to his experiences (though if one wanted to know the Bush viewpoint, there are certainly some very good biographies out there about the 41st President of the
United States). But perhaps the most important reason why this book was published is because its an important part of U.S. history
- one that describes some pretty gruesome behavior on the part of the enemy, as well as a cover-up of two governments (United States and Japan) regarding a capture of
eight Navy and Marine pilots by Japanese soldiers on Chichi Jima. These soldiers (the one escapee was George Bush) were held prisoner and treated in unbelievable (and for many, unforgettable)
manners and by some truly gruesome methods. But the book, overall, goes beyond that to describe an uneasy relationship between the United States and Japan, such a relationship that has
