doesnt seem to be too much concern; after all, this is a mineral that helps strengthen teeth. But when too much fluoride is added to the drinking water it causes
problems - but there is no solid research to determine specific links between fluoride and health problems. The purpose of this paper, however,
is to introduce fluoride (both in drinking water an through dental treatments) and to determine both if there are benefits or disadvantages, and how fluoride is monitored and measured in
drinking water. Its not the purpose of this paper to defend or denigrate fluoride, but we can introduce the pros and cons of fluoride and allow the reader to determine
to him or herself about the controversy that fluoride has created. Before beginning, however, it would be helpful to discuss what, exactly, fluoride
is. In its most basic form, fluoride is a specific mineral compound that helps with the strengthening of bones and teeth1. Its useful in preventing cavaties (also called "dental carries")
because when used properly, it can strengthen enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks that always occur inside the mouth2. Much of
the water supply in the U.S. (and around the world, for that matter) does have naturally occurring fluoride in their water. But what causes the controversy is when community officials
actually add more of this mineral to drinking water in an attempt to reduce tooth decay. This addition has caused a great deal of controversy among U.S. citizens, as there
