Art, then, can be said to be an individuals concept of the assembled emotion and psychological response to the object or scenes, and that the artist, if skilled enough, may be able to organize meaning behind the perception and experience. During a time of great creativity, called the Baroque Period, nearly every country in Europe felt its influence. However, its interpretation by the various cultures is what has given the world such great treasures as Diego Velazquezs, Las Meninas, and Paul Rubens Allegory of the Outbreak of War. WHAT IS BAROQUE? Whether the creative element is music or art, there are several defining characteristics which they all share during the Baroque Period. A dynamic juxtaposition of tension and movement, emotion and restraint typify many of the elements during this era. Along with this are the strong contrasts between light and dark, shadow and illumination. This can be seen in the artists approach to the use of highlights and position of the light, itself. Architecture during this time sported highly decorative surface elements which often had religious symbolism about it. The use of religious figures or creating religious tributes was also a characteristic subject matter. Realism takes precedence over archetypes of the former age. The attention to the spiritual nature of mankind is evident throughout the arts during this time period.
