devil." (Flannery OConnor) Having read that statement, one could quite easily jump to the conclusion that Ms. OConnor was at the least an atheist, and at the most a
rough, crude, writer of cruel human situations. A comparison of OConnor to Cardinal Newman would at first seem to be a comparison of night and day, light and dark, but
of course, that is just on the surface. It can be said that OConnors works are like drinking a latte: Youre not sure if you like the taste or not,
but you do like the effect it has on your soul. And, to top it off, the two writers are not so disparaging in their views as one might
think. OConnor, a Georgia native, states that she tries to portray in each story "an action that is totally unexpected, yet totally believable"(Mystery and Manners, 118). She like to
created wonderfully three dimensioned individuals, then place them in situations that are likened to trial by fire. What elemental part of the character is left as a result of the
hardship shows, in essence reveals the inner self of the character. The violence that is depicted in her novels are not the gratuitous variety that seem to pervade many of
the contemporary novels of today. Rather, they are a means to an end. That end, of course being to illustrate Christian mysteries of faith. In other words, through the everyday,
mundane workings in her characters lives, she is able to bring about a study of the extraordinary, and the spiritual nature of mankind. Further, it seems clear enough that those
characters whom OConnor punishes most severely are those who receive the gift of divine grace. She also tends to wield satire like a weapon where the hypocritical are concerned. In
