Therefore, though bitterness appears on the faces of some of OConnors characters, it can be said that bitterness is not the overall tone of any of her pieces. Her pieces are about universal human truths which involve self discovery. In A Good Man is Hard to Find the family is determined to take a trip to Florida for a vacation. The family includes the standard 2.5 kids and a grandmother. The story is told through the point of view of the grandmother. She is at once manipulating and controlling, insightful and superstitious. She states at the beginning of the story that if they go to Florida, where it has been rumored that there is an escaped murderer loose, they will all be killed. The family ignore her and go anyway. Hating to be left out of anything, grandmother accompanies them. Interestingly enough, there is much cause to be bitter in this story. The mother blatantly accuses her husband of not being a good man. The Grandmother is wistful as she recalls that she could have married an early suitor who later turned out to be a very rich and successful man. The Misfit is the only one who approaches bitterness, but this only comes in the form of regret at the end. In fact, if anyone were to be bitter about things, it would have to be the grandmother. It is she that manipulates the family into taking a detour to see an old plantation that she knew of in the area, and it is along this dirt road that they run into The Misfit. The grandmother has to endure the sounds of her family being executed in the woods by the Misfits men and ultimately faces her own death. ...
