Virginia. Though small by normal rebellion standards during the slavery period in the South, the Turner rebellion nonetheless represents many things; a portrait of antebellum life (especially for slaves), as
well as the portrait of a man who was convinced he was an instrument for salvation. While the Oates monograph provides a good background for Turners situation and reasons, other
information is also prevalent on the Internet. The student in this case can certainly extrapolate this information and assign it to the Oates monograph. The source we are using for
this particular paper is from the web site Africans in America, entitled Nat Turners Rebellion. The quotes are from Nat Turners own confessions, which were printed after he died.
The portrait painted of Nat Turner is not necessarily one of abuse through his short life -- but rather, one of megalomania. Basically, there
is little indicated in his background that he suffered greatly from the institution of slavery (unless, of course, you count the fact that he WAS a slave, which to many,
of course, would be justification enough to rebel). Born in 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia, Turner, from an early age, showed high intelligence
and deep spirituality even in his youth. To many of his people, he was considered already marked as "a prophet," who was "intended for some great purpose."
Because he was marked as special, Turner tended to keep to himself and devoted his time to fasting, praying and solitude for guidance. In 1821, he
attempted to escape from his overseer, but returned after 30 days in response to a vision he had, one in which his "Spirit" told him to return to his "earthly"
