make it apparent that school administrators as well as college students disregard fire safety issues on a regular basis. What it also seems to point out is that fire and
safety laws as well as policies throughout the nations colleges need to be addressed before anymore students pay for this lack of foresight with their lives. From the recent information
gathered, it seems evident that fires are caused by a general lack of knowledge about fire safety and prevention on a college campus. In many incidences, such as the following
specific cases, alcohol played a factor in the fires, improper use of cooking or heating implements, and faulty fire alarm systems. It should go without saying that alcohol impairs
ones judgment. When one is inebriated one does not stop to reason about the use of cigarettes, cigarette lighters, or other flammables. Also, alcohol slows down a persons ability to
evacuate from a burning building. If a student is passed out on the floor of a dorm room, he or she may go unnoticed or undetected in the event of
a buildings evacuation. Carelessness and lack of safety precautions with cooking units, microwaves, or single burners are also to blame for many of the following cases. Simple precautions were
not taken and as a result small fires turn into large ones quickly. A burner left on and stored under a curtain can ignite the material, quickly engulfing the small
dorm room. Likewise, microwaves that are used wrongly or which are abused can often start fires in the dorm rooms. Many students cause fires by carelessness with cigarettes. Most college
students are so exhausted that when they do go to bed, many often fall asleep with a cigarette still in their mouth. If this falls onto bedding or clothing, or
