of CEO Carly Fiorina from Hewlett-Packard. This particular event is important in the business community for many reasons. First, Fiorina was
one of only a handful of women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies. Second, it was a good example of what can happen to any executive when big plans go bust.
In this case, it was the merger between Compaq and HP that ultimate led to Fiorinas firing. But there are those who believe she was fired, not because of that
particular issue, but because she dared to be an aggressive female leader in what is still considered a mans world - that of CEOs of U.S. corporations.
Part of Fiorinas problem, noted some sources, was that of arrogance. Even near the end, when the HP board met in an emergency session
during the early part of February, Fiorina was convinced that the board would not let her go, noting that, in her words, her relationship with the board was very good,
and that the company was doing well in terms of revenues and profit (The Observer, 2005). Was she simply ignorant, or was she denying reality?
Its possible that she was a little of both - experts point out that the HP/Compaq situation was not only poor because it proved to be
a flop and a bad strategy, but because Fiorina ended up making too many people angry as she pursued the merger (The Observer, 2005).
