that conditions for women are much better than they were at the turn of the century. Varpu Lindstroms article, " I wont be a slave" chronicles the attitudes and history of Finnish women working as domestics in Canada during the early part of the 1900s. Lindstroms reason for writing the article becomes quite clear in the first few paragraphs. It is certain that Finnish women were viewed as little more than objects. They were worked long hours, for little pay, and in dangerous conditions. However, the point of the article is to argue for common decency toward the women. To argue that the women were human beings, not machines, and worthy of being respected. What is particularly noticeable is the way in which the maids viewed themselves. While their employers demanded submissiveness and a lowly deportment, the Finnish women viewed themselves in an entirely different light. They were proud of the work that they were doing and understood how integral they were to the everyday needs of the household. To that end, then, they were not the typical servile servants that many employers were used to. However, because of their great abilities at all things domestic many employers came to accept the outspoken ways of their maids. In addition to their different attitudes, many of the women devoted their entire lives to the caretaking of their employers and their families. Many of them lived in the house with the family and as such were not given to having families of their own. In many instances, the maids, even when they were too old to continue to work, had so ingratiated themselves into the heart and lives of their employers that they were kept on out of respect for their years of service.
