whole play falls apart and the presentation suffers. Therefore, when staging this for television, silver screen, or stage, it is imminently important to cast the right person for the right role. Several versions of Hamlet have been made over the years. In the two that will be examined in this paper, it is evident to see the better representations of the secondary characters and the contribution that they make to the play as a whole. Mel Gibson of Lethal Weapon fame, donned his tights for a different kind of role as he tackled Shakespeares Hamlet. His supporting actresses and actors were no slouches, either. Produced by Franco Zeffirelli, the supporting characters were rounded out with the addition of Glenn Close in the role of Gertrude, Hamlets mother. In fact, Closes rendition of Gertrude, in ones opinion, is one of the best portrayals to date. She manages to work in all of the intricacies which make this a very complex character to play. She is a mother, but she is also more than dedicated to her son, bordering on lasciviousness. She manages to make the character of Gertrude sympathetic, yet tragically flawed. Here, then, one sees a woman who has not been happy with her previous husband the king and is not overly sad that he is gone. Finding herself in yet another situation, she is making the best of it. She realizes that to be a woman in this position is to be a mere pawn and that the only person she could ever trust was her son, Hamlet. In 1969 Hamlet was produced for the screen, predating Gibsons movie by many decades. The actress who portrayed Gertrude in this film was Judy Parfitt, but she seemed a bit more cardboard in this role(Richardson). In comparison to Close, ...
