seems to be the case for The Color Purple, especially where female unity is concerned. In the novel, female unity is crucial as a means of survival, but on the
screen, this unity is seen as a point of isolation, separation or aggression. Numerous scenes emerge in the written version of The Color Purple that illustrate key and integral
relationship points. These are crucial to the understanding of the themes and the underlying motivations of the characters during the course of the novel. At an early juncture the reader
experiences the horror and the dread acceptance that Celie experiences at the hands of her stepfather. Celie is able to survive this abuse because of the support and understanding of
the women that surround her. Many of them have shared experiences similar to Celies. There are three predominantly female influences and relationships in The Color Purple that are critical
to an understanding of Celie. Shug is self assured in her sexuality and in her self identity. She is what Celie most desires for herself. Celie, because of her earlier
experiences with her stepfather, has a warped and hurtful view of her own sexuality. The very definition of love is foreign to her until Shug offers her that type of
understanding. This translates badly onto the silver screen. What is seen is the intimate sexual contact between Celie and Shug. The screen focuses on this act rather than the
