least in theory. The problem is that forming and implementing values chains take a great deal more than having the logistics firm take on delivery duties for the buyer. An
alliances between two partners to beef up the logistics process can lead to some interesting scenarios involving change management and ultimately, more improvement.
When Laura Ashley (designer and manufacturer of home furnishings and auxiliary products) announced an alliance with FedExs Business Logistics Systems (BLS), it was thought the partnership would benefit both.
For Laura Ashley, the scenario was a way to clean up its logistics chain and get suppliers and deliveries to the right places at the right times, while effectively managing
inventories. For FedEx, the alliance was its entry into the clothing business as well as Europe, meaning the firm could definitely call itself a global competitor. Needless to say, however,
such alliances also mean change for both companies as they struggle to align with one anothers goals. Choi and Wu (2009)
recently pointed out that there are more to value chains and supply chains than buyer-supplier; also important is supplier-supplier - in other words, the value chain needs to encompass the
whole scenario. The case study proves its point very well, by mentioning an instance in which a Laura Ashley customer was searching for a particular floral pattern. Laura Ashley took
