Faulkners works had an aura of the "Old South" about them, one that interestingly mimicked his own origins. Though Faulkner traveled widely throughout his career, he never quite lost the "corn-pone" style that made his stories, on the one hand, so darkly realistic and, on the other, so deeply endearing and in many ways, fascinating. Faulkners life Faulkner, in painting most of his stories with the brush of the Old South, managed to in the worlds of John B. Padgett " . . . transform his postage stamp of native soil into an apocryphal setting in which he explored, articulated and challenged the old verities and truths of the heart." (Padgett). Faulkner is best known for his novels, but he also wrote many short stories; no one is sure exactly how many (William Faulkners Short Stories). He wrote the shorter stories when sales of his novels slumped, but never did develop a liking for writing them (William Faulkners Short Stories). William Cuthbert Falkner - which is how his name was spelled at his birth - was born September 25, 1897 in New Albany, Miss. (Padgett). He was the first of four sons born to Murry and Maud Butler Falkner, an "old south" family that remembered the Civil War - the familys patriarch, William Clark Falkner, was an old Confederate colonel in it (Padgett). The Falkners moved to Oxford, Miss. before young Williams fifth birthday (Padgett; see also William Faulkner).
