modern era is the fact that the people who died in that war, by and large, were civilians, whose only offense was their ethnicity and religion. Much is known about
the atrocities perpetrated by the German nation against the Jews in Germany and Poland, but little is generally mentioned about the heinous crimes against humanity which occurred to those Jews
who were murdered in vast numbers in the German occupied Soviet Union. Generally speaking, the groups assigned exclusively to the extermination and carrying out of the murders of
the Jews were a special group called the Einsatzgruppen. However, the general military could and did take part in the mass extermination of the Jews as well. At times, working
in total compliance to the SD and the Einsatzgruppen, the armed forces would routinely execute the Jews and aid in the removal and burial of the bodies. The
relationship between the Einsatzgruppen and the armed forces was determined early on in the war. Shortly after the invasion of Russia, Heinrich Himmler was appointed to take measures to strengthen
the German presence in the occupied areas and to create living space for German settlers. This would not be an easily accomplished task, and so he created several groups of
specialized army groups within the SS, called the Einsatzgruppen. They were placed under the command of Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrichs goals, both long term and short term were implemented immediately. The
Einsatzgruppen became mobile killing units, or special ops groups, whose sole purpose was to liquidate all political enemies of the Reich. Most estimates state that these efficient groups, alone, were
responsible for the deaths of nearly 1.4 million Jews(**). There was a fine line drawn between the participation of the regular armed forces and the special killing
