These days, however, family dynamics has changed. For many reasons, the former nuclear family is more the exception than the rule. In addition, in many households, there
is no longer a strong structure to the family, and many sociologists believe that this has led directly to societal ills such as a general discontent among youngsters on the
one end, and a rise in juvenile crime (including murder) on the other. This lack of structure is called "family disorganization," and it is just starting to come to the
attention of experts in the fields of psychology and sociology as to its ramifications. But what, exactly, causes family disorganization? Is
it single parenthood? Divorce? Or society? The purpose of this paper is to use written literature to investigate the concept of family disorganization from a sociological point of view. We
will define the term, provide examples of what it is and offer consequences about the dynamics of family disorganization. As an aside, while much of the literature is based on
African-American families, this paper does not apply that only African-American families suffer from family disorganization; rather, much of the literature in the field, to date, seems to deal with studies
solely on ethnic and minority groups, as higher crime statistics have led to lower-income, ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Before discussing family disorganization and
