behind or forgotten. Sadly enough, one of the forgotten things seems to be that of family and personal relationships. Human relationships take time, and lots of it, which is just what society does not allow for those who would be successful. In Millers Death of a Salesman, it becomes evident that the disintegration of the family occurs little by little throughout the years, so that at the end of his life, no one respects Willy. Likewise, Frank Mcourt in Angelas Ashes addresses the societal pressures which forced his family, in particularly his father, to act as he did and what the dire consequences were to the children. In the end, what both works of literature seem to be stating is that the American Dream often comes at a very great price. Miller seemed compelled to tackle some of lifes toughest questions, questions that are still asked by todays family. Those questions include family values, abuse and violence as well as what constitutes the definition of success. Everyone wants to be liked, to be popular. It can be said to be part of the human condition. But, it can also be said, that Willy Loman, the sixty something traveling salesman hero from Millers play, wants this to the exclusion of reality. At the beginning of the play it becomes apparent that Willy is in trouble. Suffering from what could only be a mid-life assessment of his life, he is trying to decide where his life went wrong, why his children are so distant from him, and why he isnt where he thought he would be at this point in his life.
