it never happened. During the latter part of the 20th century, in a variety of therapists offices around the world, memories suddenly surfaced regarding childhood traumas that the participant in
the therapy had never before experienced. The therapists, therefore, considered that the memories had been repressed, and for the patient to be cured, he or she must experience those memories
once again. It was found, however, that after further investigation, that some of the memories were doubtful. Loftus, for example, tells the story of a patient who "remembered" being sexually
abused by her father as a child, with her mothers complicit assistance (apparently the mother held the child down while the father was abusing her). But upon further reflection and
some questioning of family members, the woman realized that the memory wasnt hers at all -- but unfortunately, the pain and suffering caused didnt go away.
False memory, most times, is typically in conjunction with something painful that happened during childhood, most often abuse or sexual molestation (Porter et al, 1999).
Memory is important, especially in the area of legal cases, especially cases that go back a number of years (Porter et al, 1999).
Judges and juries are in uncomfortable situations in that they must rely on testimony of adults who might "remember" some type of abuse or other childhood trauma that never occurred.
Reputations can be ruined as well, especially if the allegations of abuse turn out to be false. There have also been scenarios
of patients suing their psychotherapists for implanting such "false" memories -- after hypnotizing patients and having them "dredge" up the memories, once patients have found that those memories are not
