and the novel is concluded. However, one is left wondering what effect his death had on those who were left behind, those who mourned and those who were relieved that
he was gone. The author, Chinua Achebe, uses the title, Things Fall Apart to show how events can become a series of compounding problems based on a persons basic, and
in this case, tragic, flaws. However, when things fall apart, they also fall open. In Things Fall Apart, Oknokwos fatal character flaw is that "his whole life was dominated by
fear, the fear of failure and weakness (Achebe,16). He was terrified of being considered weak like his father had been. However, the larger picture falls open when one considers the
way in which the women were depicted. At first blush, the women are called weak and therefore are somehow less than the men in the village. However, as the men
in the story fall apart, the truth is laid open for the reader to see. In reality, it is the women who are silently stoic because theirs is the inner
strength which raised families, nursed the wounded, and silently supported the endeavors of her husband. A good example of this is how Okonkwo views his firstborn son: "a flaming fire
could have begotten a son like Nwoye, degenerate and effeminate(Achebe 143). In fact, the barbaric way in which the women are beaten and relegated to the status of property serves
only to further the contrast between Okonkwo as his world is falling apart and how the women are able to adjust, even when he cannot. Were Okonkwos first
wife to speak, one would think that she would speak with a sense of nobleness, as she is the first and as such is accorded the only amount of respect
