the society in which they live. Guy Montag is a fireman who lives in a society where books are periodically burned. Montag does not always understand the impacts of what he is doing, but he does understand that book burning is a form of oppression and that individuals in his society are ignorant. Montags wife, Mildred, does not share her husbands concerns. She spends most of her time watching television, and refuses to discuss things that are painful. Mildreds suicide attempt, for example, is something that clearly indicated her painful feelings and her issues, but she is unwilling to discuss this. Captain Beatty is Montags fire department captain, and he is a walking contradiction. Though Beatty is well-read and takes some pride in his base of knowledge, he rejects people who read and hates books, participating actively in the efforts to burn them. He becomes the voice of the opposition to Montags challenges to the book burning. Clarisse is a character that introduces the idea of freedom and the ability to challenge societal expectations. Clarisse is a young girl, just 17, and her interactions with Montag make him realize that the stalwart and oppressive society in which he is a part is not all that there is in the world. In fact, Clarisse is beautiful, curious, and unfettered by the society that burns books and reduces people to chattel. Granger shares Montags views regarding the burning of books, and is rejected from society because of it. Granger is the leader of the "Book People," and his participation in this group defines his importance for Montag.
