and loss and destruction of incalculable amounts of property. If they had beat the U.S. to developing the Atomic Bomb, in fact, World War II might have gone very differently.
What the Nazis in Germany are probably best remembered for, however, was their systematic annihilation of people who werent involved directly in
the war. All told, the Nazis destroyed 30 million people, and among these people, none were so hated and despised by the Nazis as the Jewish people. Jews were so
hated by Adolf Hitler, Germanys leader, that he devised a "Final Solution" almost from the start of his siege over Europe to rid the continent of what he considered the
"Jewish problem." However, figuring out why Hitler singled out the Jews, and why he ultimately felt that mass extermination was the only means to deal with them, remains a mystery.
Hitler didnt just hate Jews, he despised all who didnt fit his Aryan ideals. Yet it was the Jews that he targeted. Although the "Final Solution" is a well-known atrocity
from the annals of Nazism, very little written evidence of its existence - or why it was even initiated - is available. Scholars can guess, however, based on existing papers,
what happened. Although "the Fuhrers Order on the Final Solution" was never committed to paper, the first official order of it was
possibly given to Hermann Goering (government minister), Heinrich Himmler (head of the S.S.) and Reinhard Heyrich (head of the Reich Main Security Office), who passed it down during the summer
