It is a novel on the decaying condition of the society of the United States as honor and integrity and hard work get lost in the desire to reach the new materialistic American Dream. To further support this particular theme the author clearly does not wish to fill the pages of the novel with simple day to day events, but rather wishes to get to some of the most interesting and important aspects of the story as they relate to this theme as it concerns just a few people. In doing this Fitzgerald does not always provide the reader with a continuous line of events, describing them as they happen, but rather seems to jump around, even taking us far back in time to detail the life of Gatsby so we understand where he is coming from. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines Fitzgeralds use of time in "The Great Gatsby." Time and "The Great Gatsby" In the very beginning of the story, in Chapter 1, Nick provides us with the beginning of the narration, subtly taking us back and forth through time. He begins by discussing his father, and his family, and thus establishes some of his ideals and his personality. He then discusses how he in the present, and why, then shifts to discussing the people who are Daisy and Tom. He briefly tells us of who Tom once was, allowing us into the situation better prepared to know the man he will be interacting with.
