influenced other nationalities and was, in turn, influenced by historical context. This is demonstrated by the fact that over half of the Bible consists of historical narration, with its
authors focusing on Gods acts in human events (Breneman, 1993, p. 16). In other words, the Bible demonstrates that the way that God works with his people is through a
historical context. The Old Testament books of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther demonstrate to the modern reader of the Bible how this pertains relative to the history of the Persian Empire.
The books of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther describe the history of the children of Israel during the time of this empire. These books demonstrated to the Jewish people of
that era how they were connected to the rest of Jewish history, despite their long Babylonian exile. It showed them that they constituted a continuation of Gods redemptive plan (Breneman,
1993, p. 50). This continuation of the people of God also meant that there was a continuation of the covenant that existed between the people of Israel and the
Almighty. The continuation of this covenant reaches from the past through to the new covenant represented by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. An examination of these
books will, therefore, demonstrate the biblical, historical and theological bridges that exist between the Old and New Testaments. The Chronology of Ezra and Nehemiah Rowley (1965) points out that
