examples in the Old Testament because he was so totally devoted to God and because he was able to lead the people back to the Lord. Hooks1 tells us that
the Hebrew translation of his name is treasure or helper. And, Ezra was certainly a spiritual treasure and helper to the people in post-exilic Israel. It was his career
that helped him gain the skills and knowledge that he would need as Gods emissary to Judah.2 He was completely familiar with Gods Word, knowledge he needed as a spiritual
leader. He was also accustomed to working with people so he knew how to approach different kinds of people.3 More importantly, Ezra was used to working with people who were
in authority.4 This helped him obtain what he needed from the king.5 During his life, Ezra became closer and closer to God, a relationship that also helped enable him to
become a spiritual leader. Ezra was a scribe who was also an expert in the Laws of Moses before God called him to lead the people. Here was a
man who prayed about everything; he prayed before his journey from Babylon to Jerusalem, he prayed for the people. When he heard about the people in Judah, he prayed a
long prayer of confession.6 It may be because of Ezras knowledge and profound faith that God called him to serve in a different way, as a spiritual leader to the
broken people. It has been suggested that Ezra had a melancholy temperament. Although this is thought to be a rather dark temperament it has many positive aspects. These people are
analytical, faithful, sensitive, emotional, self-sacrificing and they tend to be perfectionists. They can also be self-centered in terms of always examining themselves and their acts, pessimistic and very moody. Ezra
