the civil rights movement. The following summations are drawn from the book that serves as a companion to this informative series. Part 2: Standing for Justice: Mississippi and the
Till Case This segment of this documentary series begins by discussing the immediate aftermath of the landmark Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Board of Education, on May, 17, 1954, a
day that segregationist referred to as "Black Monday" (Williams 38). In Mississippi, which was the "supremacist and segregated state in the country," a backlash of white anger quickly formed that
resulted in beatings, burnings, and lynchings (38). While Klan members were usually poor, rural white men, now "white collar" white men organized "Citizens Councils" for the express purpose of
instituting economic reprisals against blacks who had the audacity to insist on their rights. Black people were indiscriminately murdered for such things as organizing voter registration of blacks, or talking
back to a white person (38). One of these victims was Emmett Till, a fourteen-year-old boy from the South Side of Chicago. In August of 1955, Emmett and
his cousin were visiting relations near Money, Mississippi. Emmett was bragging about to neighborhood boys that he had a white girlfriend back in Chicago when the other boys bet him
that he wouldnt go over and speak to a white women who was also in the Mississippi grocery store. Emmett took the dare and said "Bye Baby" to the woman.
