Congress that the energy industry has taken advantage of the situation to increase their oil prices and as a result reap in huge profits. A single quarterly report is
not a complete representation of the financial status of any company. The energy industry has a multitude of expenses that they must face themselves as a result of the
natural disaster. However, the media continues to focus on what they perceive to be an unfair advantage of the energy industry in light of the problems associated with Hurricane
Katrina and Hurricane Rita. BACKGROUND The Exxon Mobile Corporation is headquartered in Irving, Texas which is a suburb of Dallas, Texas (Exxon Mobile, 2005). Exxon Mobile is an
oil producer and distributor throughout the world and as such is one of the largest publicly-traded companies (Exxon Mobile, 2005). The company was founded on November 30, 1999 when
the separate oil companies of Exxon and Mobil merged (Exxon Mobile, 2005). It is anticipated that by the end of 2005, Exxon Mobil will overtake Wal-Mart in the terms
of revenue earned (Exxon Mobile, 2005). Exxon Mobile exists as an example in American history, as it was formed by the consolidation of the previously two largest oil companies,
Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (Exxon) and Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (Mobile) (Exxon Mobile, 2005). CURRENT BAD PRESS AND THE TRUTH Since the occurrence of Hurricane Katrina
in the Gulf Coast followed by the effects of Hurricane Rita in the same area, the oil companies have reported what appear to be unusually high and record profits.
