in everyday life, and the second being the movement of terrorism to the forefront of American consciousness following the attacks against the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. As
one of the first majorly significant historical events for America in the 21st century, the decade since has been marked in many ways by the events of "9/11". Domestic policy
has been radically altered to the extent that many believe the government has overstepped its boundaries in what is acceptable policing, infringing upon the fundamental individual liberties that are supposed
to be central to American society. Perhaps more significant on the global stage is the fact that the United States has since become mired in two international conflicts: dual wars
in Afghanistan and Iraq. What makes these conflicts different from others that have come before is the fact that the wars are not against foreign states as such, but rather
what are regarded as fringe elements within those foreign states; for example, the war in Afghanistan is not against the Afghan government, but rather against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, groups
characterized as being composed of "radical" and "extremist" Muslims who employ the use of terroristic attacks (such as the one against the World Trade Center) to advance their religious and
social agenda. Since the institution of these wars, it is fair to say that United States foreign policy has been fundamentally opposed to what it calls "extremist" Islam in all
forms. However, the wars were ostensibly begun to bring an end to the actual actions of terrorism, not the passive ideologies of extremism. The effectiveness of the wars, then, depends
entirely upon the assumption of a legitimate relationship between extremism and terrorism. This paper will explore such a relationship and attempt to provide a meaningful distinction between the two.
