of searching neighboring villages, then countries, then continents. With these horizons conquered, we turn our attention to the skies. We have been able to garner vast amounts of
knowledge concerning our own solar system, and from this platform, we seek to look even further. Now science is investigating planets outside of our solar system, and the possibility
of life on one of these planets continues to provide intrigue and motivation for further research in this area. The
notion of planetary worlds orbiting stars other than our Sun is not new. Throughout history, beginning with the Greeks, humans have been pondering over the possibility of other solar systems
beyond our own (Introduction to Extrasolar Planets, 2003). Science has indeed established that planets do orbit stars outside of our solar system. Its almost incomprehensible to realize that
there are 100 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, and therefore the number of possible planets orbiting these stars is likewise incomprehensible. Of the planets that do exist
and/or may exist, some are entirely uninhabitable, and so the prospect of life is non-existent. For these planets, they are nothing but arid desserts of frigid hydrogen balls.
But isnt it just possible that there potentially exists a planet full of lush forests and/or fertile oceans? From this environment, surely life would be possible, wouldnt it?
Clearly then, this underscores the reason for the exploration into other planets, as the possibilities for knowledge beyond our own borders is a fundamental source of mans curiosity.
In terms of astronomy, science has made huge strides in recent decades. Only recently, researchers have found evidence of many new
