It can be argued that extranet-based applications are more similar to the historic "client/server security model" (Anonymous, 1997) in that it decreases the inherent expense of having to serve clients, while at the same time giving them instant entry to services and data. "The extranet idea came to the fore because electronic commerce of all kinds needs some boundaries" (Brown, 1997, p. PG). Electronic commerce is one of the most recognized types of extranet-based application, which is typically utilized on one of the web sites restricted areas. Users are expected to pay an entrance fee in order to obtain the necessary information or service, at which time they can either receive a token (password) that enables them to gain entry again and again, or for those sites that sell products, users are expected to pay up front either by credit card or Cybercash. While the benefits are many, drawbacks revolve around the restrictions imposed upon general access, rendering ones user base wholly limited to those willing to pay. "Extranets will allow companies to better manage electronic commerce investments by working only with trading partners with whom they already have done business" (Brown, 1997, p. PG).
