stage of social, political and economic development in the host country. Organizations must consider these additional driving forces when doing business in other geographic regions (Carter). Dell is the largest
direct-sales technology company in the world (Lower, 2008). They offer all sorts of technology products and continue to improve and expand their line. They were successful in transferring their direct
marketing process to other parts of the world. It is only in the last few years, Dell has agreed to allow certain retailers such as Wal-Mart sell their products.
There are significantly higher risks when doing business in other countries. As an example, another country may suddenly change its tax rates for businesses. And, there are some regions in
the world where intellectual property rights are not acknowledge or followed. China is one of those countries and it is in China that Dell is involved in its greatest expansion
efforts. The specific external environment analysis will focus on China since this is where Dell is making strong efforts to gain market share. The Chinese government promotes domestic companies a
great deal more than foreign companies. There are strict laws and regulations that govern things like using the Internet (Morato). The government is known to change regulations at will without
warning to the foreign business community. There is a significant amount of red tape Dell and other computer companies must journey through to obtain different permits (Morato). And, while Dell
