The goal of early childhood education (ECE) is to aid parents in helping children developing strong learning foundations (MOE, 2009a). The expressive arts can help young children learn "to express
their feelings and explore and learn about the world around them" (MOE, 2009b). The class for which the following act activities were planned are under two years of age,
therefore, the point made by the MOE that toddlers need a prepared space in which they can freely express themselves was a guiding principle in planning (MOE, 2009b). Furthermore, the
MOE points out that toddlers will approach art using "large movements," that is, moving the whole arm rather than just the hand, but that as the brain develops and small
muscle control begins to come online and "movements get more specific" (MOE, 2009b). Therefore, planning of activities considered not only expression, but also the level of cognitive and physical development
that is typical of children under the age of two. The four areas Art: There are several specially prepared areas where toddlers can express themselves artistically. As suggested
by the MOE site, there is a finger-painting table that is child-sized that is protected by paper, with a blank sheet of paper for the child to draw lightly taped
