1. Introduction In any country the type of consumer goods which are demanded will reflect the level of economic and social development which in turn
is influenced by issues such as the level of disposable income, lifestyles and accessibility of goods. One market that is seeing increased levels of demand for many consumer items is
China, since many of the barrier to trade have been decreased following the opening up of the economy and China joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), there are increasing opportunities
for foreign firms to enter the Chinese market. China offers a large number of opportunities, the country is presenting a market that is expected to be the largest global market
in the future, it is also a market where many household appliances are within growth stages of the lifecycle as a more consumerist society emerges. This makes China a good
potential market for a company that wants to export vacuum cleaners into the country. In order to assess whether or not the market is viable, opportunity alone is
not sufficient to make it viable, there has to be consideration of the short and long term characteristics of the market and the way that the market needs are likely
to develop. To do this we need to look at the macro environmental factors, an assessment of the influences that will impact on demand, import controls and potential impacts resulting
