that will ultimately expose a number of critical components directly associated with the explosive device. Initially, forensic investigators must establish whether the detonation was the result of low or high explosives, which are differentiated by the way they discharge their power. Low explosives do not detonate but rather serve as the conduit to an explosion, such as in the propelling energy behind gun powder; high explosives, by contrast, actually do cause detonation by virtue of a significantly greater pressure of force (Society of Explosives Engineers, Inc., 2006). Next they determine whether the explosive was a sophisticated, commercial composition or an Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs), otherwise known as a homemade bomb. The extent to which IEDs can be made of virtually any kind of component and explosive design is both grand and far-reaching; that these homemade devices can utilize a single explosive composition or many types of biological, toxic or radiological elements speaks to the wide and varied approaches these dangerous bombs can take (GlobalSecurity.org, 2006). Some of the most common uses for IEDs are in pipe bombs, postal delivery, briefcases and car bombs. The four types of fusing systems include: 1. Time-preset to detonate or arm the device at an unknown interval of time. The timer may be mechanical such as a kitchen timer, wind-up wristwatch, pocket watch, or electronic, i.e. digital wristwatches, integrated circuit chips, or solid-state timers. 2. Victim activated-may be designed to function by pressure, pull, movement, vibration, tension release, or tilting the item. Booby-trapped is the best way to describe it. 3. Command-sending a signal via radio frequency or through a hidden wire from a remote location. 4. Environmental-designed to function when there is a change in temperature, pressure, light, sound, or magnetic field (The Bureau of Diplomatic ...
