the figure of Christopher Columbus. Thought widely painted as the "discoverer of America" and something of a "national hero", the reality of Columbus voyage to America, and the circumstances of
his discovery, are less glorious than the majority of history books would have one believe. Loewens text attempts to dispel many of these false assumptions and generate a more cohesive
and realistic view of history. This paragraph helps the student begin to indicate what they thought about the readings. As Loewen states early in the Columbus-centric chapter of his
work, the majority of textbook authors in American have "taken us on a trip of their own, away from the facts of history, into the realms of myth" (Loewen 1996).
Indeed, this seems to be the case for Columbus, who is widely regarded by the majority of Americans as more of a mythological than a historical figure, one of the
ephemeral and poorly-known specters of history who are blindly celebrated and venerated without knowing the real facts. In the case of Columbus, however, this is particularly offensive, because by obscuring
the facts of Columbus "discovery" of America, academics are establishing a perverse image of cultural supremacy that not only diminishes the understanding of students, but reinforces the social privileges of
the same social classes and national groups who have enjoyed political and social privilege for the last several centuries. There are some elements of Loewens analysis, of course, that
I was already familiar with. For instance, I already knew that, contrary to what many seem to believe, Columbus was not the first one to "discover" America. The continent, obviously,
was already peopled with an abundance of complex and diverse cultures in the form of Native American tribes. Even apart from this fact, however, one can point to a number
