They know that when their children see a toy commercial it falls into the grand scheme of marketing, but what is marketing exactly? Phillip Kotler (2005) defines marketing as follows: "Marketing is the science and art of exploring, creating, and delivering value to satisfy the needs of a target market at a profit" (p.1). Smith & Taylor (2004) use a simple, dictionary definition instead: "The business of moving goods from the producer to the consumer" (p.5). In essence, marketing is about selling goods to customers, but it also implies seducing the customer or winning them over. A personal definition of marketing should definitely embrace the fact that a firm is promoting a product in such a way as to win the consumers pocketbook, and possibly their hearts. Marketing is more than just advertising a product. It involves making sure that repeat business is acquired. It is about making the company look good. Marketing is multidimensional and it is difficult to provide a comprehensive definition of all that marketing involves. However, some examples might help in exploring this compelling topic. Marketing is important to organizational success. Again, one has to realize that marketing does not mean selling something to a consumer who will regret their purchase. That is poor marketing. Many people call that a scam. Marketing is supposed to promote the business that sells the targeted product, in addition to a specific product or product line.
