had some interesting variations when applied to the health care industry. This is because the United States is fairly unique in the world in regards to having a health care
system centered in capitalist ideology, wherein "administrators" and "managers" must make decisions about health care not simply on the basis of providing needed care to the sick, but also on
the basis of maximizing profits and beating the competition. Of course, in order to be competitive, health care organizations also have to increase the quality of their care. For these
reasons, the health care organization in the United States faces a unique challenge: how to both raise quality of care while reducing costs. The answer, of course, is to focus
on organizational efficiency, but because of the unique nature of health care delivery, and the complexity of the "product" being sold, traditional models for competitive efficiency will not suffice. To
