Online Dictionary defines prejudice in two ways: first as a legal term, meaning injury or damage, particularly where legal rights are concerned; and second (this is the one were interested
in) as a "preconceived judgment or opinion" or an "adverse opinion ... formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge." Prejudice then is an opinion that one person forms of
something without actually knowing anything about it. One of the most irritating bumper stickers in history goes something like this (and is a perfect example of closed mindedness in
action): "God said it. I believe it. That settles it." Well that kills any debate stone dead right there. Notice the assumptions, as well as the arrogance, of these statements.
First, the person sporting this particularly nasty sticker is convinced of the existence of God, a view that is not shared by everyone. Second, the person is convinced that the
word of God is in all cases the absolute Truth. That is a matter of faith, not fact. But the third statement is the worst of the bunch: "That settles
it." This person will not engage in any sort of debate or discussion; for him, if its in the Bible, its completely factual and need not be discussed any further.
In addition, implied in the statement is another statement: "Im right and if you dont believe the way I do, youre wrong." This is a closed mind in action.
