divisions exist in the field of psychology about where personality predominately comes from; the division is so vast and abstract that it is almost a philosophical and metaphysical view rather
than a purely psychological one. The dichotomy of which I speak is often referred to as the "nature vs. nurture" argument, or the argument between the viewpoint that personality is
predominately created by nature in the form of biological instincts and genetic inheritance, and the viewpoint that personality s predominately created by "nurture", which is to say that societal and
environmental factors have a greater impact that innate "natural" factors. This paper will explore this dichotomy in depth, in an attempt to come to an understanding of how best to
approach the problem in the future. The history of the nature vs nurture argument arises in the early 20th century. Prior to this point, the prevalent psychological viewpoint was
the "Kraepelinian" viewpoint, which "postulate an organic causation" of personality and behavior (Keltner et al., 2001). While this view was widely accepted, the arrival of Freud and his new theory
of psychoanalytical psychology offered a new perspective: that personality was largely the construction of environmental factors which in turn create deep-seated neuroses which unconsciously drive behavior (Keltner et al., 2001).
Since the early 20th century, then, psychologists have been deeply divided on this issue, to the extent that deep study of one line of psychological theory often precluded study of
the other. Competing schools of thought such as biopsychology and social psychology began to emerge, with radically differing views of personality and its development. In recent years, however, it
