to quantitatively measure some aspect of a clients personality through the examination of traits, characteristics, and other overt manifestations of personality. However, accurately using such tests is essential, or else one cannot rely upon the tests to be reliable and produce valid results. Ultimately, in order to make effective use of tests, counselors and therapists must be as knowledgeable about the use and coding of individual tests as possible. This means it is necessary to get information from as many diverse sources as possible. One place to turn to in order to find information about specific psychological tests is books that have been written about those tests. This may seem obvious, but it bears mentioning because book-length works devoted to a singular test tend to be among the most nuanced, detailed, and information-rich sources of information we have about tests. As a key example, one might look at Dahlstrom, Welsh, and Dahlstroms two-volume book on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, or the MMPI (Hogan, 2007). This work is one of the most exhausting tomes anywhere on a key personality test, and may be the reason why the test has today become as widely spread and frequently used as it has. Additionally, within the realm of books written on the topic of psychological tests, it is considered particularly rich, and to have "established the standard for book-length treatments about a single test" (Hogan, 2007).
