beliefs? It can be argued that it does all three. First, though, its important to note that most, if not all, films do at least one of these; if not,
theres really no reason to make a movie. Even the lightest comedy depends for its meaning on some cultural issue; for instance, Theres Something About Mary become notorious for the
fact that the heroine spent much of the film with her male companions ejaculate in her hair without knowing it. But the joke would not have been possible if the
entire audience didnt know what had happened, and why its funny. In this case, it is a cultural taboo to have sex in public, which is basically whats going on
here; that is widely accepted and understood. If it were not a cultural norm for people to have intimate relations in private, this scene wouldnt be funny. But the film
doesnt address serious issues in any deeply thoughtful way. Comedies can be much more serious. The recent film Its Complicated, with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin is a case in
