for the overall betterment of that organization. This paper will explore how best practices are utilized in a wide variety of environments, including intermodal shipping, commercial organizations, and in the
military, with an emphasis on how best practices in one discipline can be used to enhance those in another. Intermodal best practices stem from the basic mission of intermodal
industries, which is to provide the highest quality and most efficient shipping services possible, while lowering costs and ensuring the highest level of customer satisfaction. A 1993 report on the
intermodal industry reported on the development of the Intermodal Association of North America, a governing body that would oversee the development and growth of the industry in Canada and the
United States ("Intermodal", 1993). This organization would eventually be responsible for introducing many of the best practices that still are used in the industry to this day, including the use
of information-system driven quality management and customer information management processes ("Intermodal", 1993). The development of such processes supported by information systems enabled the industry as a whole to become much
more efficient, reducing the maximum delay time for train shipments to just three hours, even on cross-country trips, increasing carriage to over 6 million tons annually, and in general increasing
the satisfaction of customers through providing them superior quality service by virtue of having more organized access to critical information on each of them ("Intermodal", 1993). Besides these automated processes,
