an increased need for palliative care services. Street, Love and Blackford (2005) note that this has resulted in an emerging focus on mainstreaming palliative care services in aged care
and acute care settings. The researchers conducted a study of a variety of elements related to palliative care services that are now being provided in Victoria, where mainstreaming has
occurred, and this article relates one segment of the research findings of that study. The purpose of this study, then, is to report the findings of their research regarding
the significance of bereavement care as an "integral" component of palliative care provided within aged care and acute care settings. The research questions considered include the following:
1. Do existing bereavement care services include the assessment of at-risk families for complicated grief reactions? 2. Are there formal bereavement programs in these settings? 3. Does
the facility have trained volunteers to address the problems facing families with complicated grief reactions? 4. Do the existing bereavement programs correspond with the goals set by the
PCA Standards on Bereavement Care? The review of literature relates the significance of the study to the changing needs of the aging Australian population and shift in the way
in which care is provided for aging and dying adults in general. In addition, the researchers recognize that preparation for dying is an important component of palliative care and
existing research suggests that families without support are more likely to demonstrate problematic grief responses. Methods The research design is based on content analysis, which relates the
