example of how the job of the production planner in this industry is difficult is when batches of flu vaccine are needed. There have been shortages in the past, so
shortage is an issue. Other production problems may be related to logistics, or how the company can transport a good deal of product without spoilage. Expiration dates come into play
as the longevity of the pharmaceutical product may dictate how items are packaged or shipped. A student asks how one might use exploratory and causal research designs to
help the job of the production planner in the pharmaceutical industry. The objectives of exploratory research are to gain insights and come up with ideas (Wrenn, Stevens & Loudon, 2006).
Hypotheses are generated, and data collection is loosely structured (Wrenn, Stevens & Loudon, 2006). As far as causal research is concerned, the goal is to test the variables for a
causal relationship (Wrenn, Stevens & Loudon, 2006). Hypotheses are tested with the use of an experiment and the structure is very controlled (Wrenn, Stevens & Loudon, 2006). Again, one problem
that crops up goes to storage of medicines. It is well known that medication should not be kept in conditions that are too hot or too cold for a long
period of time. Refrigerated trucks can help to keep medications cold, but that is not always prudent. For example, Epi-Pens should not be stored in refrigerated areas. It is noted
that for the Epi-Pen Auto-Injector, the medication should be kept at room temperature away from sunlight, heat or moisture ("EpiPen Auto-Injector," 2010). It should never be refrigerated or kept in
an automobile ("EpiPen Auto-Injector," 2010). This is a good example of a product that needs to be discussed at length in regard to transportation. A production
