theme of the story, which is the way in which society sanctions the oppression of the rights of women, particularly within the framework of marriage. Discussion In actual fact there
are several important themes running through the story, including the need to for self-actualization; the desire to transcend the role that society has decreed it is "suitable" for a woman
to play; and the frustration of being treated as a child when one is an adult. But all of these are in a way related to the idea of oppression,
and so we will explore that. One of the first things we notice is the number of times the woman says "John says," or "John tells me." We never hear
that John sat down and had a serious discussion with his wife, merely that he told her to do something, or even worse, told her how she felt. The reader
is probably torn between astonishment and rage: how dare John presume to tell his wife that he knows how she feels better than she does? Its absolutely impossible for anyone
to truly climb inside someone elses head, so Johns eternal preaching is the worst sort of patronizing. He stops just this side of patting her on the shoulder and saying
"Dont worry your pretty little head about it" and sending her to bed with milk and cookies. He treats her like a child. We also begin to wonder why she
thinks this man is such a wonderful physician. She is deeply depressed following the birth of her baby-a not uncommon experience-but her husband is oblivious to her suffering. Perhaps he
simply doesnt understand it, but again, as a doctor he should have had some experience with this illness, or at least know of it. Not only is he completely blind
