the title, which uses the definite "the," not the general "a" as we might expect. This indicates that we are going to be looking into one specific playroom, not playrooms
in general. And what a room it is! We are first introduced to Lucy who has a "family of dolls," which seems quite normal and cheerful. But the second line
tells us that this is not normal at all, because Lucy is busy scraping an emery board over the face of the Mother doll, disfiguring it (Gwynn). This can either
be construed as indicative of Lucys hatred of her mother, or, if we consider the Freudian explanation, it shows us Lucys desire to obliterate her mother so that she can
take her place. Her brother is an equally wretched creature; he is about to set fire to the cat because hes bored: "While Charles, with match and rubbing alcohol, /
Readies the struggling cat, for Chuck is bored" (Gwynn). We thus have a portrait of siblings who are steeped in violence and enjoy inflicting pain. The second stanza indicates that
there are more children in the house, and that they too like torturing and killing living things: "The young ones pour more ink into the water / Through which the
latest goldfish gamely swims" (Gwynn). The ink will poison the fish, but the worst part of it is that this is only the "latest" in a long line of unfortunate
fish which the parents give to their children, only to have them destroyed. That brings up a question that must be addressed: Are the parents aware of the monstrous acts
of their offspring, or are they ignorant of their childrens crimes? Gwynn doesnt give us a direct answer to that, but logic would suggest that the parents have to
