Political realism assumes that power is the primary end of political action, whether in the domestic or international arena (Political Realism, 2002).
At the international level, this theory suggests that nation states are the primary agents and should maximize their power (Political Realism, 2002, See also An Analysis of The Empire
of Civil Society, 2002). Clearly, the overall defining ideology of this theory is power and self-interest (Political Realism, 2002). "Political realism in essence reduces to the political-ethical principle
