There are a number
of ways in which current research into the application of expertise might be said to influence the way in which novices are taught, both in terms of teaching methodology and
in the relevance of expertise itself. For example, in some instances it would be true to say that since the novices are required to learn specific information which is a
pre-requisite to other forms of learning, then the imparting of expert knowledge is the first stage in developing cognitive skills of problem-solving and deduction which will be required later in
the learning process.
In these cases, expertise will be required in the sense that the student can only proceed with honing and utilising cognitive skills once the basic principles have been acquired,
and this is something which relies on the teacher providing the initial body of knowledge from a standpoint of superior expertise rather than peer teaching. Stolarchuk and Fisher (2001), in
their study of the use of laptops in school science teaching, make the point that although the relative newness of the technology means that to some extent the novices in
this case are not able to draw on a great deal of expertise on the part of the staff, it is essential that the teachers undergo specialised training in order
