demonstrate is that traumatic experiences like dog attacks in childhood have an impact on adult psychological response. In this case, adult responses to dogs may be correlated with dog
attacks in childhood. In order to gain insight into adult responses to childhood events, there are three possible studies that will be outlined, one experimental, one quasi-experimental, and on
qualitative, which will assess responses of an adult population. Experimental Design An experimental design is a research design in which the researchers create controls and allocate specific elements
that influence the research subjects (Experimental Design, 2003). In other words, the researchers take a subject population, introduce variables to the subject population, and control for environmental or extraneous
factors that can influence the outcomes of the experiment (Campbell and Stanley, 1966). Often times, experimental designs include the use of a control subject group, a group in which
the variables are not introduced but assessments are still made, in order to determine whether the outcomes relate to the introduction of the variables or if they occur in every
subject population (Experimental Design, 2003). In the case of an experimental study of people who have been attacked by dogs in childhood, the experiment conducted will
use visual images to initiate stress responses in individuals who have experienced dog attacks, and compare their response to individuals who have not reported dog attacks in their childhood.
A population of 50 subjects will be selected, 25 of whom have noted dog attacks in childhood and a control group of 25 people who have not noted dog attacks
in a self-reporting instrument. The total sampling of 50 subjects will be selected based on a response-criterion, and responses will be taken until 25 subjects are found for each
