This is particularly important when it is estimated that there are at least 4 million patients every year in receipt of a urinary catheter (Gokula et al, 2004, p196). Furthermore,
25% of patients who are hospitalised are likely to have an indwelling urinary tract catheter at some point during their stay (Gokula et al, 2004, p196). The experiences of catheter
users vary, and include the physical effects of wearing a catheter, as well as the impact it has on their daily life and experiences associated with the presence of a
catheter. One of the most obvious potential complications associated with catheter is the development of a urinary tract infection. When examining patients with in a hospital setting that have been
catheterised Gokula (et al, 2004, p196) pounded incidence rate of roughly 5% bacterial infections occurring everyday. The potential for a urinary tract infection in the inpatient and outpatient population appears
to have a relatively high incidence rates, although research varies. ODonohue (et al, 2010, p65) found that the 62% of catheterised patients in the study had suffered at least one
urinary tract infection in the preceding 24 months. Wild (et al, 2010, p309) found an even higher incidence rate, of 70% within the preceding eight months. Infection is not the
only problem faced by patients with urinary catheters, other physical experiences associated with the use of the catheter include leakage, blockage and other interference with daily life such as dislodgement.
Leakage also appears to be a relatively commonplace problem, Wild (et al, 2010, p309) found that 79% of catheter users in a study reported a leakage, 74% a blockage and
