for the internet in the value chain can be seen with the sheer numbers of transactions and the level of trade. In 2000 there were 300 million people in the
world accessing the internet, and there was a total of 407.1 million that had access to it, 41% of these were in the North America. By the year 2004 the
total revenues for internet trade, otherwise known as e-commerce, is predicted at reaching US$1,533.2 billion (Hobley, 2001). Therefore, it is understandable for companies, especially those selling no tangible products, such
as travel, would want to gain a foothold in this medium. The presence is not enough, the success will also depend on the marketing of the web site and the
presentation and ease of use of the web site when the potential customers get there. This can be illustrated by looking at three travel industry web cites. Expedia
Expedia.com is one of the best known travel sites. The web page is easy to load and the address of www.expedia.com is easy to
remember. The page also detects if the user is outside the US and checks which countries page they want to connect to. The site is clear and easy to read,
with a white background and a friendly cartoon style airplane as a logo at the top of the page to create branding. The colours are predominantly pale blue, a safe
and calming colour, one that potential customer are likely to find calming. It may be argued that this may represent a slight older or mare mature target market (Budny, 2003).
