World history has been influenced by a number of factors. Two of the most predominant of these factors, however, is national mindset and technology. The two of these have combined at many points in history to set the path for future world events. Such was the case in the sixteenth century. Just a couple of hundred years before Europe was a relative backwater in comparison to China and India. By the sixteenth century, however, the tables were turned. They were turned because of the differing mindsets that existed in these regions and the ever-evolving technological arena. During the Medieval period China in particular was well ahead of western Europe in terms of their production of material goods. This fact couple with another to put China in a position where she could have become the imperialist power of the time rather than Europe. During the fifteenth century China would undertake the chore of building one of the worlds most impressive naval fleets. This fleet of ships, and the men who sailed them, would bring China to the brink of a new world direction. Interestingly, however, that direction would end abruptly as the leadership of China fell from one mans hands to that of his sons. In "When China Ruled the Seas: The Treasure Fleet of the Dragon Throne, 1405-1433" author Louise Levathes explores the factors which were at play in fifteenth century China which determined Chinas relationship with the rest of the world.
